Write an equation to represent each problem. Show your work.
Problem 1 :
The Lopez family goes to the movies. They buy 2 adult tickets for $6 each and 3 child tickets for $4 each. Write an equation to represent how much money the family spends on movie tickets, t.
Solution :
The Lopez family goes to the movies.
2 adult tickets for $6 each.
3 child tickets for $4 each.
= 2 × 6 + 4 × 3
= 12 + 12
= 24
So, the family spends on movie tickets is 24.
Problem 2 :
Grace earns $5 each time she walks her neighbor’s dog. She walks the dog 5 times in one week. Then she spends $7 on a book and $9 on a building set. Write an equation to represents how much money grace has left, m.
Solution :
Grace earns the money = $5
She walks the dog 5 times in one week.
She spends on a book = $7
Building set = $9
= (5 × 5) – (7 + 9)
= 25 – 16
= 9
So, 9 money grace has left, m.
Problem 3 :
During the basketball game, Mika makes 3 baskets worth 2 points each, 2 baskets worth 3 points each, and 2 free throws worth 1 point each. Write an equation to represent how many points Mika scores, p.
Solution :
Number of baskets she makes 3 2 2 |
Worth of each (as point) 2 3 1 |
= 3 × 2 + 2 × 3 + 2 × 1
= 14
Mika scores the points p is 14.
Problem 4 :
Will has 20 pounds of apples. He makes 2 batches of applesauce that use 4 pounds each, one batch of apple butter that uses 6 pounds, and he uses 3 pounds to make juice. Write an equation to represent how many pounds of apples will has left, p.
Solution :
He makes 2 batches of
applesauce that use 4 pounds each.
= 2 × 4
= 8 pounds
Quantity used for apple butter = 6
Quantity used for juice = 3
Total pounds of apples p = 20 – (8 + 6 + 3)
= 20 - 17
= 3 pounds.
