WORD PROBLEMS ON VOLUME OF A RECTANGULAR PRISM AND CUBE

Volume of Rectangular Prism

In geometry, a rectangular prism can be defined as a 3-dimensional solid shape which has six faces that are rectangles. A rectangular prism is also a cuboid.

To find volume of rectangular prism, we follow the formula

= length x width x height

Volume of Cube

In Geometry, a Cube is a solid three-dimensional figure, which has 6 square faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges.

Volume of cube = a3

Problem 1 :

a)   900 cubic feet    b)   600 cubic feet

c)   300 cubic feet    d)   90 cubic feet

Solution :

Volume of a rectangle = length × height × width

= 15 × 10 × 6

V = 900 cubic feet

So, option (a) is correct.

a)   4 inches     b)   8 inches

c)   6 inches     d)   3 inches

Solution :

Volume of a box = 216 cubic inches

a³ = 216

a = 216

a = 6 inches

So, option (c) is correct.

Problem 3 :

What is the volume of the truck bed which is 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and has a height of 3 feet?

a)   40 cubic feet     b)   12 cubic feet

c)   30 cubic feet     d)   120 cubic feet

Solution :

Given, length = 10 feet, Width = 4 feet and Height = 3 feet

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 10 × 3 × 4

V = 120 ft³

So, option (d) is correct.

Problem 4 :

John has a fish tank at home. The tank is rectangular in shape and has dimensions of 8 feet x 6 feet × 4 feet. What is the volume of the tank?

a)   92 cubic feet    b)   192 cubic feet

c)   24 cubic feet     d)   48 cubic feet

Solution :

Given, length = 8 feet, Width = 6 feet and Height = 4 feet

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 8 × 6 × 4

V = 192 ft³

So, option (b) is correct.

Problem 5 :

How much water is needed to fill a water tank that is 15 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep?

a)   60 cubic feet            b)   32 cubic feet

c)   480 cubic feet          d)   120 cubic feet

Solution :

Given, length = 15 feet, Width = 8 feet and Height/depth = 4 feet

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 15 × 8 × 4

V = 480 ft³

So, option (c) is correct.

Problem 6 :

Kelly bought a new rectangular cage for her pet. What is the volume of the cage if it is 4 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet high?

a)   20 cubic feet          b)   24 cubic feet

c)   18 cubic feet          d)   32 cubic feet

Solution :

Given, length = 4 feet, Width = 3 feet and Height = 2 feet

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 4 × 3 × 2

V = 24 ft³

So, option (b) is correct.

Problem 7 :

A juice box measures 6 cm by 4 cm by 10 cm. What is the volume of the juice box?

a)   240 cubic centimeters    b)   40 cubic centimeters

c)   60 cubic centimeters       d)   24 cubic centimeters

Solution :

length = 6 cm, Width = 4 cm and Height = 10 cm

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 6 × 4 × 10

V = 240 cubic cm

So, option (a) is correct.

Problem 8 :

What is the volume of the rectangular shaped box which measures 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 5 feet deep?

a)   40 cubic feet        b)   120 cubic feet

c)   160 cubic feet      d)   32 cubic feet

Solution :

length = 8 feet, Width = 4 feet and Height = 5 feet

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 8 × 4 × 5

V = 160 ft³

So, option (c) is correct.

Problem 9 :

Find the volume of a prism that is 5 m long, 40 cm wide, and 2500 mm high.

a)   50 cubic meters            b)   200 cubic meters

c)   500 cubic meters          d)   5 cubic meters

Solution :

length = 5 m

Width = 40 cm, 40/100 = 0.4 m

Height = 2500 mm, 2500/1000

= 2.5 m

Volume of rectangle prism = length × height × width

V = 5 × 0.4 × 2.5

V = 5 m³

So, option (d) is correct.

Problem 10 :

What is the volume of the rectangular shaped box which measures 12 m long, 6 m wide, and 4 m deep?

a)   144 cubic meters      b)   72 cubic meters

c)   24 cubic meters        d)   288 cubic meters

Solution :

length = 12 m, Width = 6 m and Height/depth = 4 m

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 12 × 6 × 4

V = 288 m³

So, option (d) is correct.

Problem 11 :

What is the volume of the rectangular shaped box which measures 6 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet deep?

a)   32 cubic feet    b)   18 cubic feet

c)   36 cubic feet    d)   16 cubic feet

Solution :

length = 6 feet, Width = 3 feet and Height/depth = 2 feet

Volume of rectangle = length × height × width

= 6 × 3 × 2

V = 36 ft³

So, option (c) is correct.
