WORD PROBLEMS ON FRACTIONS

Problem 1 :

On Monday, Adam walks 3/10 of a mile to the store and then 4/10 of a mile to the park. How far does he walk in all?

Solution :

Distance walked for store = 3/10 mile

Distance walked for park = 4/10 mile

Total distance = 3/10 + 4/10

= 7/10 mile

Adam walked 7/10 of a mile.

Problem 2 :

Shawna practices piano for 4/6 of an hour and takes a break.  Shawna then practices for 2/6 of an hour more. How long does Shawna practice in all?

Solution :

Piano practices time = 4/6 of an hour

Extra time = 2/6 of an hour

Total time = 4/6 + 2/6

= 6/6

= 1 hour

Shawna practices piano for 1 hour.

Problem 3 :

Sammy has 4/5 of his art project left to paint. He paints 2/5 of the project. What fraction of the project is left to paint?

Solution :

Quantity of art project left to paint = 4/5

Quantity of project completed = 2/5

= 4/5 - 2/5

= 2/5

2/5 of the art project is left to paint.

Problem 4 :

Yuna plans to run 1 mile. She has run 7/10 of a mile so far. What fraction of a mile does she have left to run?

Solution :

Distance to be covered = 1 mile

Distance covered by Yuna = 7/10 mile

Distance left over = 1 - 7/10

= 3/10

3/10 of a mile is left to run.

Problem 5 :

Javier has 7/8 of a cup of flour. He uses 3/8 of a cup in a recipe. How much flour does Javier have left?

Solution :

Quantity of flour he has = 7/8

Quantity of flour used = 3/8

Left over = 7/8 - 3/8

= 4/8

= 1/2

1/2 of the flour is left.

Problem 6 :

Kailee has finishes 4/5 of her math homework so far. What fraction of her math homework does she have left to finish?

Solution :

She finishes 4/5 of her math homework.

Quantity of work does not finish = 1 - 4/5

= 1/5

Kailee has 1/5 of her math homework to finish.

Problem 7 :

Marianne has 6/8 of a yard of green ribbon. She uses 3/8 of a yard for a craft project. How much green ribbon is left?

Solution :

Quantity of green ribbon Marianne has = 6/8

Quantity used = 3/8

Quantity of ribbon left over = 6/8 - 3/8

= 3/8

3/8 of a yard of green ribbon is left.

Problem 8 :

Alex and Brady are helping to pack books into a box. Together they pack 7/12 of the books. Alex packs 4/12 of the books. What fraction of the books does Brady pack?

Solution :

Quantity of books they have together = 7/12

Quantity of books Alex has 4/12

Quantity of books Brady has = 7/12 - 4/12

= 3/12

3/12 of the books are left for Brady to pack.
