Problem 1 :
Isabella has found that she stays the most fit by running various distances and terrains throughout the week.On Mondays she runs 2.5 miles, on Tuesdays 4.6 miles,on Thursdays 6.75 miles, and on Saturdays 4.8 miles. What is the average distance Isabella runs on each of the days that she runs? Round to the nearest hundredth of a mile.
Solution :
Distance covered on Mondays = 2.5 miles
on Tuesdays = 4.6 miles
on Thursdays = 6.75 miles
on Saturday = 4.8 miles
Average = Total distance to be covered / 4
= (2.5 + 4.6 + 6.75 + 4.8) / 4
= 18.65/4
= 4.66
Problem 2 :
Shane wants to figure out what grade he is getting in math. His test scores were 85.6, 78.5, 92.5, 67, and 83.7. What was his average test score? What grade will he receive?
Solution :
Average score = Total score / 5
= (85.6 + 78.5 + 92.5 + 67 + 83.7)/5
= 407.3/5
= 81.46
Average score is 81.46 and he will get grade B.
Problem 3 :
Jody and Lazaro are cycling in a 24-mile race.
If they both started the race at the same time, who will finish first? How much faster will they finish the race ?
Solution :
Time = distance / speed
Distance to be covered = 24 miles
Average speed of Jody = 8 miles per hour
Average speed of Lazaro = 6 miles per hour
Time taken by Jody = 24/8
= 3 hours
Time taken by Lazaro = 24/6
= 4 hours
Jody will finish the race first with the difference of 1 hour comparing Lazaro.
Problem 4 :
LA player’s batting average was 0.29 rounded to the nearest hundredth. Write 0.29 as a percent.
Solution :
0.29 is rounded to the nearest hundredth.
To convert 0.29 as percent, we have to multiply the decimal by 100%.
= 0.29 x 100%
= 29%
Problem 5 :
In a recent season, Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets had a field goal average of 0.40 rounded to the nearest hundredth. What is 0.40 written as a percent?

0.40 is rounded to the nearest hundredth.
To convert 0.40 as percent, we have to multiply the decimal by 100%.
= 0.40 x 100%
= 40%
Problem 6 :
Mr. Ishikawa left Houston at 3:00 P.M and arrived in Dallas at 8:00 P.M., driving a distance of approximately 240 miles. During his trip, he took a one-hour dinner break. What was Mr. Ishikawa’s average speed?
Solution :
Average speed = Total distance covered / total time taken
Distance covered = 240 miles.
Time taken to reach the destination = 3 pm to 8 pm
5 hours
Since he took one hour for break = 5 - 1
= 4 hours is the travelling time
Average speed = 240/4
= 60 miles per hour
Problem 7 :
Ana bought a van that holds 20.75 gallons of gas and gets an average of 15.5 miles per gallon. How many miles can she expect to go on a full tank?
Solution :
Capacity of the van = 20.75 gallons
Average = 15.5 miles per gallon
Number of miles it can go = 20.75 (15.5)
= 321.625 miles
Problem 8 :
Miranda is an excellent spinner who averages 3 points on her spins during competitions. Last year her total spin points equaled 21. About how many spins did she successfully complete?
Solution :
Average = 3 points
Total spins = 21
Average = Sum of spins / total number of spins
3 = 21/total number of spins
Total number of spins = 21/3
= 7 spins
Problem 9 :
Dan’s scores for speed this season are
-1, -3, 1, -1, 2, 0
What is his average speed score for the season?
Solution :
His score :
-1, -3, 1, -1, 2, 0
Average = [-1 + (-3) + 1 + (-1) + 2 + 0]/6
= (-5+3)/6
= -2/6
= -1/3
So, his average is -1/3.
