USE BAR MODEL TO SOLVE WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

Mr. Brown has 9 mirrors.

Each mirror has 9 sides.

How many sides do the mirrors have in all?

Solution :

= 9 × 9

= 81

The nine mirrors have 81 sides in all.

Problem 2 :

Pencils are given to 4 children.

Each child has 6 pencils.

How many pencils do the children have in all?

Solution :

= 24

The children have 24 pencils in all.

Problem 3 :

Andi has nine dolls.

Each doll costs $6.

How much do the nine dolls cost in all?

Solution :

= 9 × 6

= 54

Andi’s nine dolls cost $54 in all.

Problem 4:

Tim has 8 pieces of wood.

He saws each piece into 5 smaller pieces.

He then packs them equally into 4 bundles.

How many pieces of wood does each bundles have?

Solution :

= 8 × 5

= 40

= 40/4

= 10

10 pieces of wood have in each bundle.

Problem 5 :

There are 51 children at a party.

A clown brings some balloons to the party.

He bursts 15 balloons while trying to inflate them.

How many balloons does he bring if each child receive 3 balloons?

Solution :

= 51 × 3

= 153

= 153 + 15

= 168

So, the clown brought 168 balloons.

Problem 6 :

Lynn has 4 times as many trading cards as Linda. Linda has 4 trading cards. How many trading cards do they have in all?

Solution :


= 4 × 4 + 4

= 16 + 4

= 20

Lynn has 20 trading cards in all.

Problem 7 :

Linda shares 24 trading cards equally among 4 girls. How many trading cards does each girl receive?

Solution :

= 24/4

= 6

6 trading cards each girl receive.

Problem 8 :

Linda has 6 packs of trading cards. There are 8 trading cards in each pack. How many trading cards are there in all?

Solution :

= 6 × 8

= 48

There are 48 trading cards in all.

Problem 9:

Linda has 24 trading cards. She packs them into 6 packs equally. How many trading cards does each pack have?

Solution:

= 24/6

= 4

4 trading cards have in each pack.

Problem 10 :

Chloe has 3 boxes of hair clips.

Each box has 12 hair clips.

How many hair clips does Chloe have in all?

Solution :

= 12 × 3

= 36

Chloe has 36 hair clips in all.

Problem 11 :

Josie has 4 black T-shirts. She has 3 times as many white as black T-shirts. How many T-shirts does she have in all?

Solution :

= 3 × 4

= 12

12 + 4 = 16

Josie has 16 T-shirts in all.
