TRANSFORMATION WITH LINEAR FUNCTIONS

Considering the function,

y = f(x - h) + k

  • If h > 0, then move the graph horizontally right h units.
  • If h < 0, then move the graph horizontally left h units.
  • If k > 0, then move the graph vertically up k units.
  • If k < 0, then move the graph vertically down k units.

Problem 1 :

3 units up

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s1.png

Since, we have to move the line 3 units up.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

y-intercept = (0, 1)

= (0, 1+3)

= (0, 4)

Since, we move 3 units up. So we have to change y-coordinate only.

Problem 2 :

7 units right

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s2.png

Since, we have to move the line 7 units right.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

x-intercept = (-3, 0)

= (-3+7, 0)

= (4, 0)

Since, we move 7 units right. So we have to change x-coordinate only.

Problem 3 :

5 units left

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s3.png

Since, we have to move the line 5 units left.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

x-intercept = (1, 0)

= (1-5, 0)

= (-4, 0)

Since, we move 5 units left. So we have to change x-coordinate only.

Problem 4 :

8 units down

Transformation-with-linear-functions-q4.png

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s4.png

Since, we have to move the line 8 units down.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

y-intercept = (0, 3)

= (0, 3-8)

= (0, -5)

Since, we move 8 units down. So we have to change y-coordinate only.

Problem 5 :

1 unit down

Transformation-with-linear-functions-q5.png

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s5.png

Since, we have to move the line 1 unit down.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

y-intercept = (0, -1)

= (0, -1-1)

= (0, -2)

Since, we move 1 unit down. So we have to change y-coordinate only.

Problem 6 :

2 units up

Transformation-with-linear-functions-q6.png

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s6.png

Since, we have to move the line 2 units up.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

y-intercept = (0, 0)

= (0, -2)

Since, we move 2 units up. So we have to change y-coordinate only.

Problem 7 :

6 units right

Transformation-with-linear-functions-q7.png

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s7.png

Since, we have to move the line 6 units right.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

x-intercept = (-5, 0)

= (-5+6, 0)

= (1, 0)

Since, we move 6 units right. So we have to change x-coordinate only.

Problem 8 :

4 units left

Transformation-with-linear-functions-q8.png

Solution:

Transformation-with-linear-functions-s8.png

Since, we have to move the line 4 units left.

Let us take one of the point the straight line.

x-intercept = (2, 0)

= (2-4, 0)

= (-2, 0)

Since, we move 4 units left. So we have to change x-coordinate only.
