POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS CONNECTING IN REAL LIFE

There are two types of numbers.

i) Positive numbers

ii) Negative numbers.

Real situations of having positive numbers :

We gain something or increased something.

For example,

  • in a business we have received the profit of $100 means, we will write it as + 100.
  • if we loss $50 means, we will write it as -50.

Problem 1 :

Write each word under the correct heading,

Positive

Negative

Words

1) Below

2) gain

3) taken away

4) above

5) added to

6) deposit

7)  bonus

8) lost

9) increase

10) 5 wrong

11) 6 correct

12) Decrease

13) fall

Solution :

1) Below = -

2) gain = +

3) taken away = -

4) above = +

5) added to = +

6) deposit = +

7)  bonus = +

8) lost = -

9) increase = +

10) 5 wrong = +5

11) 6 correct = -6

12) Decrease = -

13) fall = -

Represent the following statements as integers.

Problem 2 :

Rony earned $5

Solution :

He is earning, so we use positive (+)

= +5

Problem 3 :

The temperature falls 100 degrees.

Solution :

The temperature falls means it reduces, so -100 degree.

Problem 4 :

Tim won 20 points

Solution :

Won, he has gained. So, we use positive sign.

+20

Problem 5 :

Jack lost forty dollars

Solution :

Lost means we have to reduce. Then, we use negative sign.

- 40

Problem 6 :

The plant has grown 3 inches since last month

Solution :

Grown means it is increased, then we will use positive.

+ 3

Problem 7 :

Thomas has to pay $4 as penality

Solution :

Amount that he has to pay, then the amount should be reduced.

- 4

Problem 8 :

The cat lost its two kittens

Solution :

Lost two kittens, so -2

Problem 9 :

Rosy have 12 excessive stamps compared to others.

Solution :

Excessive stamps, so +.

+ 12

Problem 10 :

Henry won a lottery amount of $50

Solution :

Won the amount, so + 50.

Problem 11 :

Andy got 7 set of watches as gift.

Solution :

+ 7

Problem 12 :

Zack lost 5 pounds since last month.

Solution :

He lost, then we use the negative sign. +5.

Problem 13 :

The temperature in Fargo, North Dakota was 6° F at noon. By 4 pm the temperature dropped to -10° F. What integer represents the change in temperature ?

Solution :

At noon the temperature = 6° F

At the end temperature dropped = -10° F

Change in temperature = -10 - 6

= -16° F

Problem 14 :

A snail climbs 3 inches up a wall. Then it slides 6 inches down the wall. What integer represents the distance the snail traveled from its original position ?

Solution :

It is climbing up 3 inches, so +3

Slides down 6 inches, so -6

We have to consider the initial position is at 0. 3 units it is coming down.

Problem 15 :

During scuba lessons, Sue dove 30 feet, Harrie dove 120 feet and Kathy dove 90 feet. What integers represents these depts ? Order the integers from least to greatest.

Solution :

The surface will be 0

Sue is at -30

Harrie is at -120

Kathy is at -90

Ordering from least to greatest,

-120, -90, -30
