Problem 1 :
Richard's class wrote letters to third grade pen pales in Canada. The class made a graph of the number of letters they wrote each week.
How many letters were written during week 4 and week 3 ?
a) 7 b) 10 c) 20 d) 30
Solution :
Key : Each letter is 3 letters.
Number of letters in week 3 = 3(3) ==> 9
Number of letters in week 4 = 7(3) ==> 21
= 9 + 21
= 30 letters
So, the number of letters were written during week 3 and 4 is 30. Then option d is correct.
Problem 2 :
The graph shows how many plate lunches the school cafeteria prepared for each third grade teacher's class on Wednesday.
How many more plate lunches were needed Mr. Cohen's class than were needed for Mr. Gomez's class ?
Solution :
Key : 1 plate = 3 plate lunches.
Number of plates in Gomez = 6
Number of plates in Cohen = 9
Difference = 9 - 6
= 3
= 3(3)
= 9 plates
Problem 3 :
The graph shows the number of students who were absent from Houstan Elementary on Friday.
What is the difference between the total number of students in grade 3 and grade 4 and the total number of students absent in grade 1 ?
a) 1 b) 3 c) 2 d) none
Solution :
Key : Each face will represent 2.
Total number of students in grade 3 and grade 4 :
= 4 + 5.5
= 9.5
Total number of students in grade 1 = 8.5
Difference between them = 9.5 - 8.5
= 1
1 face = 2 students
Option c is correct.
Problem 4 :
The graph shows the cost of school supplies at the school store.
How many cents less does notebook paper cost than a box of markers ?
Solution :
Number of notebook paper = 8
Cost of notebook paper = 8(0.10)
= 0.80
Number box of markers = 13
Number box of markers = 13(0.10)
= 1.3
Difference between two costs = 1.3 - 0.80
= 0.5
50 cents is the difference.
Problem 5 :
Tamika's class collected cans for the food drive. The class made a graph of the number of cans they collected each week.
How many cans were collected during week 1 and week 2 ?
Solution :
Key : Each can will be equal to 10 cans
Number of cans collected in week 1 = 7 (10) ==> 70
Number of cans collected in week 2 = 5(10) ==> 50
Total number of cans collected = (7 + 5) (10)
= 12(10)
= 120
Problem 6 :
The annual City Roller Skating Contest will be held in April. Contestants were surveyed to find the number of times they practiced roller skating in March. The graph below shows the results of survey.
Which statement is not supported by the information shown in the pictograph.
a) The number of contestants who practiced 3 times is 2 times the number of contestants who practiced 5 times.
b) Half as many contestants practiced 7 times as the number of contestants who practiced 8 times.
c) The number of contestants who practiced 7 times is 18 more than the number of contestants who practiced 4 times.
d) The number of contestants who practiced 7 times is 18.
Solution :
Number of contestants practiced 3 times = 8
= 8 (3)
= 24
Number of contestants practiced 4 times = 9
= 9 (3)
= 27
Number of contestants practiced 5 times = 4
= 4 (3)
= 12
Number of contestants practiced 7 times = 6
= 6 (3)
= 18
Number of contestants practiced 8 times = 12
= 12 (3)
= 36
So, option c is not supported the given pictograph.
