ORDER OF OPERATIONS WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

The middle school team scored three field goals worth three points each and two touchdowns worth six points each, including extra points. Write the numerical expression to find the team's score. Then evaluate the expression.

Solution :

Worth of 1 field goal = 3 points

Number of field goal scored by the team = 3

Number of touchdowns = 2

Worth of each touch down = 6

Numerical expression :

= 3 (3) + 2 (6)

Evaluating the numerical expression :

= 9 + 12

= 21 points

So, the team score is 21 points.

Problem 2 :

The perimeter of a hexagon is found by adding the lengths of all six sides of the hexagon. For the hexagon below write the numerical expression to find the perimeter. Then evaluate the expression.

word-problems-on-order-of-operationq1

Solution :

Perimeter = Sum of length of all sides

= 2(8) + 4(5)

= 16 + 20

= 36 units

So, the perimeter of the given shape is 36 units.

Problem 3 :

Aisha bought school supplies consisting of 6 spiral notebooks costing $0.39 each, 2 packages of pencils at $0.79 each, and a ring binder  for $1.99. Write an expression to find the total amount Aisha spent on school supplies. Then evaluate the expression.

Solution :

Cost of spiral notebook = $0.39

Number of spiral notebook = 6

Number of package of pencils = 2

Cost of package of pencil = $0.79

Cost of ring binder = $1.99

Total amount she spent = 6(0.39) + 2(0.79) + 1.99

= 2.34 + 1.58 + 1.99

= $5.91

So, Aisha spends $5.91.

Problem 4 :

Mr Firewalks took his family out to eat. They ordered 3 meals costing $8.99 each, 2 sodas at $1.50 each and 1 glass of tea for $1.25. Write an expression to find the total amount of Firewalks family spent on dinner before taxes and trip. Then evaluate the expression.

Solution :

Cost of meal = $8.99

Number of meals ordered = 3

Cost of soda = $1.50

Number of sodas ordered = 2

Cost of tea = $1.25

Total amount spent for dinner

= 3(8.99) + 2(1.50) + 1.25

= 26.97 + 3 + 1.25

= $31.22

So, the total amount spent for dinner is $31.22

Problem 5 :

At the electronics store, each video is priced at $10, each DVD is priced $15 and each CD priced at $25. Kyle buys 3 videos, 2 DVDs and 2 CDs. Set up the equation using order of operation to find his total cost without tax.

Solution :

Cost of each DVD = $15

Cost of each CD = $25

Cost of each video = $10

Number of videos, DVDs and CDs they purchased are 3, 2 and 2 respectively.

= 3(15) + 2(25) + 2(10)

= 45 + 50 + 20

= 115

So, the total cost is $115.

Problem 6 :

Travis goes to the book fair where paperback books are $1.50 and hardback books are $3. Travis buys five paperback and two hardback books. How much change will Travis receive from a $20 bill?

Solution :

Cost of each paper book = $1.50

Cost of each hard book = $3

Number of paper books = 5

Number of hard books = 2

Amount he is providing = 20

Change he will get,

= 20 - (5(1.50) + 2(5))

= 20 - (7.5 + 10)

= 20 - 17.5

= 2.5

So, he will get the change as $2.5.

Problem 7 :

Kim sales necklaces to earn extra money. She charges $10 per necklace for material and $2.75 per hour to make unique gifts. How much would two necklaces cost together if one takes her an hour to make and the other three hours to make?

Solution :

Cost of material to make one necklace = $10

Cost per hour of working = $2.75

Number of necklaces to make = 2

Total cost = 2(10) + (1+3)2.75

= 20 + 4(2.75)

= 20 + 11

= 31

So, the total cost to make 2 necklaces is $31.
