HOW TO MEASURE THE BEARING OF B FROM A

Compass bearing :

We are most familiar with the directions of the four main compass points : North, South, West or East. They are often called the cardinal directions and are  900 apart.

This method uses only acute angles between 00 and 900. The angles are measured either clockwise or anticlockwise from North or South.

From compass bearings we start facing North or South and turn then towards the East or West.

For example, in the diagram shown the bearing of B from A is N 350 E

This means that an observer at A facing North, needs to turn 350 towards the East to face B.

True bearings :

This method uses clockwise rotations from true north directions and so angles between 00 and 360are used.

When writing a true bearing we always use three digits. For example, we write 0720 instead of 720

True bearing of B from A is 317 degree.

Problem 1 :

Find the compass bearing of B from A

find-bearing-problem1.png

Solution :

The bearing of B from A is N 60° E.

Problem 2 :

find-bearing-problem2.png

Solution :

Instead of keeping the initial position from the direction north, we can start with the direction south.

The bearing of B from A is

= 90 - 25

= 65

= S65° E.

Problem 3 :

Solution :

Keeping the initial position at A and compass facing north, the bearing of B from A is

= N 70° E.

Problem 4 :

find-compass-bearing-q2.png

Solution :

Keeping the initial position at A and compass facing south, the bearing of B from A is

= S 30° W.

Problem 5 :

find-compass-bearing-q3.png

Solution :

Keeping the initial position at A and compass facing north, the bearing of B from A is

= N 50° W.

Problem 6 :

find-compass-bearing-q4.png

Solution :

Instead of keeping the initial position of compass from the direction north, we can start with the direction south.

The bearing of B from A is

= 90 - 30

= 60

= S60° W.

Problem 7 :

find-compass-bearing-q5.png

Solution :

Instead of keeping the initial position of compass from the direction north, we can start with the direction south.

The bearing of B from A is

S65° E.

Problem 8 :

find-compass-bearing-q6.png

Solution :

Instead of keeping the initial position of compass facing north,

the bearing of B from A is

= 90 - 15

= 75

N75° E.

Find the true bearing of B from A.

Problem 9 :

Solution :

True bearing of B from A is 070 degree.

Problem 10 :

finding-true-bearing-q2.png

Solution :

True bearing is 160 degree.

Problem 11 :

finding-true-bearing-q3.png

Solution :

True bearing is 213 degree.

Problem 12 :

finding-true-bearing-q4.png

Solution :

True bearing is 312 degree.

Problem 13 :
