HOW TO CONVERT PERCENT TO DECIMAL

What is percent ?

In mathematics, a percentage is a number or ratio that can be expressed as a fraction of 100. If we have to calculate percent of a number, divide the number by whole and multiply by 100.

Hence, the percentage means, a part per hundred. The word per cent means per 100. It represented by the symbol “%”

Convert the given percentage as decimal.

Problem 1 :

135%

Solution :

= 135%

= 135 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal two digits backward.

135% = 1.35

Problem 2 :

18.4%

Solution :

= 18.4%

= 18.4 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal two digits forward.

= 0.184

Problem 3 :

42.5%

Solution :

= 42.5%

= 42.5 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal two digits forward.

= 0.425

Problem 4 :

37.5%

Solution :

= 37.5%

= 37.5 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal two digits forward.

= 0.375

Problem 5 :

46.4%

Solution :

= 46.4%

= 46.4 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal two digits forward.

= 0.464

Problem 6 :

9  1/2%

Solution :

= 9  1/2%

Mixed fractions is convert to the improper fractions.

= 19/2%

= 9.5 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal one digits forward.

= 0.095

Problem 7 :

6  2/3%

Solution :

= 6  2/3%

Mixed fractions is convert to the improper fractions.

= 20/3%

= 6.7 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal one digits forward.

= 0.067

Problem 8 :

8  1/2%

Solution :

= 8  1/2%

Mixed fractions is convert to the improper fractions.

= 17/2%

= 8.5 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal one digits forward.

= 0.085

Problem 9 :

7.8%

Solution :

= 7.8%

= 7.8 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal one digits forward.

= 0.078

Problem 10 :

21.4%

Solution :

= 21.4%

= 21.4 ÷ 100

Since we have two zeroes at the denominator, we move the decimal two digits forward.

= 0.214

Problem 11 :

During a sale, all items are advertised at 10% off the retail price. A coat usually cost $60. Workout the disocunt on this item.

Solution :

Cost of coat = $60

Offer = 10% of sale price

Discounted amount = 10% of 60

= 10/100 x 60

= (10 x 60)/100

= 6

So, the required discounted price is $6.

Problem 12 :

A piece of ribbon measures 80 cm. 10% of the ribbon is cut off. What length of ribbon is cut off.

Solution :

Length of ribbon = 80 cm

Ribbon cut off = 10% of length of ribbon

= 10% of 80

= (10/100) x 80

= 8 cm

So, the length of the ribbon they cut off is 8 cm.

Problem 13 :

A bag is advertised having 20% off the retail price. If the bag usually costs $40, work out the disocunt.

Solution :

Cost of bag = $40

Offer = 20% of retailed price

= 20% of 40

= (20/100) x 40

= 2 x 4

= 8

So, the discounted amount of bag is $8.

Problem 14 :

In a group of  school children, only 72% remember to bring a pencil to school. What percentage of students did not remember to bring a pencil ?

Solution :

Percentage of students remembering to bring pencil = 72%

Percentage of students did not remember to bring pencil = (100 - 72)%

= 28%

So, 28% of students did not remember to bring pencil.

Problem 15 :

In a leisure center, 18% of people are swimming, 25% of people are in the fitness class and the rest are in the gym. What percentage of people at the leisure center are in the gym.

Solution :

Percentage of people who are in swimming = 18%

Perncentage of people who are in fitness class = 25%

Remaining percentage of people = 100 - (18 + 25)%

= 100 - 43%

= 57% of people who are in the gym.

Problem 16 :

Maise slices her birthday cake into several pieces. One slice is 10% of the whole cake and a different slice is 1/8 of the whole cake . Which slice is larger?

Solution :

To check which part is greater, we may convert both into same measures.

10% = 10/100

= 0.1

1/8 = 0.125

By comparing these two, we know that 0.125 is greater.

Problem 17 :

A coat is reduced in a sale by 10%. Given that the usual price of the coat is $120. Calculate the sale price.

Solution :

Usual price of coat = $120

Amount reducing = 10% of usual price

= (10/100) x 120

= 12

So, the sale price should be reduced by $12.

Problem 18 :

Thirty-six percent of the songs on your MP3 player are pop songs. Write this percent as a decimal.

Solution :

Percentage of pop songs = 36%

= 36/100

= 0.36

Problem 19 :

CAT About 0.34 of the length of a cat is its tail. Write this decimal as a percent.

Solution :

Length of tail = 0.34

= 0.34 x 100%

= 34%

Problem 20 :

The percents of students who travel to school by car, bus, and bicycle are shown for a school of 825 students.

converting-percent-todecimal-q1

a. Write the percents as decimals.

b. Write the percents as fractions.

c. Make a bar graph that represents how the students in your class travel to school.

Solution :

a)

Percentage of students who use car = 20%

= 20/100

= 0.20

Percentage of students who use school bus = 48%

= 48/100

= 0.48

Percentage of students who use bicycle = 8%

= 8/100

= 0.08

b)

Percentage of students who use car = 20/100

= 1/5

Percentage of students who use school bus = 48%

= 48/100

= 12/25

Percentage of students who use bicycle = 8%

= 8/100

= 2/25

c)

Percentage of students who use car = 0.20(825)

= 165

Percentage of students who use school bus = 0.48(825)

= 396

Percentage of students who use bicycle = 0.08(825)

= 66
