HOW TO CONVERT DECIMAL TO PERCENT

To convert a decimal as a percentage, we have to multiply the decimal by 100%.

Convert the following decimal to percentage :

Problem 1 :

0.03

Solution :

= 0.03

Multiply 0.03 by 100.

= 0.03 × 100%

= 30%

Convert the following decimals to percentage :

Problem 2 :

1.5

Solution :

= 1.5 × 100%

We see one digit after the decimal, but we have to move the decimal two digits since 100 is having two zeroes.

So, 

= 150%

Problem 3 :

0.01

Solution :

= 0.01

Multiply 0.01 by 100%.

 = 0.01 × 100%

We see two digits after the decimal. We have to move the decimal two digits since 100 is having two zeroes.

= 1%

Problem 4 :

0.15

Solution :

= 0.15

Multiply 0.15 by 100%.

= 0.15 × 100%

We see two digits after the decimal. We have to move the decimal two digits since 100 is having two zeroes.

So,

= 15 %

Problem 5 :

0.008

Solution :

= 0.008

Multiply 0.008 by 100%.

= 0.008 × 100%

We have three digits after the decimal. We have to move the decimal two digits since 100 is having two zeroes. So,

= 0.8 %

2.317

Solution :

= 2.317

Multiply 2.317 by 100%.

= 2.317 × 100%

We have three digits after the decimal. We have to move the decimal two digits since 100 is having two zeroes. So,

= 231.7 %

0.0875

Solution :

= 0.0875

Multiply 0.0875 by 100%.

= 0.0875 × 100%

We have three digits after the decimal. We have to move the decimal two digits since 100 is having two zeroes. So,

= 8.75 %

Solution :

= 0.009

Multiply 0.009 by 100%.

= 0.009 × 100%

Solution :

= 0.0625

Multiply 0.0625 by 100%.

= 0.0625 × 100%

= 6.25 %

Solution :

= 2.254

Multiply 2.254 by 100%.

= 2.254 × 100%

= 225.4 %

Problem 11 :

A writer earns $3400 a month. Last month she spent $204 on food. What percent of her income was spent on food?

Solution :

Monthly earning = $3400

Amount spent for food = $204

Percentage of income spent for food = (204/3400) x 100%

= 0.06 x 100%

= 6%

Problem 12 :

On the average, 7 people out of 28 ride the bus to work. What percent do not ride the bus to work?

Solution :

Total number of people = 28

Number of people ride to bus = 7

Number of people do not ride to bus = 28 - 7

= 21

Percentage of people who do not ride to bus = (21/28) x 100%

= 0.75 x 100%

= 75%

Problem 13 :

Last season a baseball player hit 48 home runs. So far this season he hit 30 home runs. The number of home runs he has hit so far this season is what percent of the number of home runs he hit last season?

Solution :

Percent of number of home runs he hit last season = (30/48) x 100%

= 0.625 x 100%

= 62.5%

Problem 14 :

A survey showed that hamburgers are preferred to hot dogs 5 to 3. What percent of those surveyed prefer hamburgers?

Solution :

Percentage of survyed who prefer hamburgers = (3/5) x 100%

= 3 x 20%

= 60%

Problem 15 :

In April, 175 cases of toy cars were sold. In May, 125 cases were sold April’s sales were what percent of May’s sales?

Solution :

Number of cars sold in April = 175

Number of cars sold in May = 125

= (175/125) x 100%

= 1.4 x 100%

= 140%

Problem 16 :

Robert sold 20 cups of lemonade and 40 cups ice tea at the FFA stand at the county fair. What percent of the drinks sold were lemonade?

Solution :

Number of cups of lemonade = 19

Number of cups of ice tea = 40

Percentage of drinks sold were lemonade = 40/19 x 100%

= 2.10 x 100%

= 210%

Problem 17 :

Seventy-five percent of Mr. Whipple’s customer prefer Charmin toilet paper. There were 280 customers in his store today. How many prefer Charmin?

Solution :

Number of customers in his store = 280

Percentage of customers prefer Charmin toilet paper = 56%

Number of customers prefer Charmin toilet paper = 0.56 (280)

= 156.8

approximately 157 customers.

Problem 18 :

There are 850 students at Altamont Junior High School. Of these, 36% are in the eighth grade. How many students are in the eighth grade?

Solution :

Percentage of eight grade students = 36%

Total number of students = 850

Number of students who are eight grade students = 36% of 850

= 0.36 (850)

= 306 students

Problem 19 :

Fifteen percent of the cassette tapes delivered to the J-Mart were new releases. How many new releases were there out of the 360 cassette tapes?

Solution :

Percentage of cassette tapes delivered = 15%

Number of cassette tapes = 360

Number of new releases = 18% of 360

= 0.18 (360)

= 64.8
