EQUATIONS AND PATTERNS

Problem 1 :

Find out how many counters are in each of the boxes. Remember to take away the same amount on both sides so the balance is kept.

equationsandpatternnewq1

Solution :

I will take away 2 from each side. This leaves me with:

3 x ❒ = 9

1❒ = 9/3

1 ❒ = 3

Creating the equation,

3 x 3 + 2 = 11

Problem 2 :

equationsandpatternnewq2

Solution :

I will take away 3 from each side. This leaves me with:

2 x ❒ = 12

1❒ = 12/2

1 ❒ = 6

Creating the equation,

2 x 6 + 3 = 15

Problem 3 :

equationsandpatternnewq3

Solution :

I will take away 4 from each side. This leaves me with:

2 x ❒ = 10

1❒ = 10/2

1 ❒ = 5

Creating the equation,

2 x 5 + 4 = 14

Look carefully at each balanced scale and work out what the symbols equal

Problem 4:

equationsandpatternnewq4

Solution :

Given

18 + 5 ⬤ = 11⬤

Take away 5⬤ from both sides.

18 = 11⬤ - 5⬤

18 = 6

1⬤ = 18/6

1⬤ = 3

Problem 5 :

equationsandpatternnewq5

Solution :

Given

49 + 3 ⬤ = 10⬤

Take away 3⬤ from both sides.

49 = 10⬤ - 3⬤

.

49 = 7

1⬤ = 49/7

1⬤ = 7

Problem 6 :

equationsandpatternnewq6

Solution :

Given

60 + 4 ⬤ = 8⬤

Take away 4⬤ from both sides.

64 = 8⬤ - 4⬤

64 = 4

1⬤ = 64/4

1⬤ = 16

Problem 7 :

equationsandpatternnewq7

Solution :

Given

36 + 2 ⬤ = 8⬤

Take away 2⬤ from both sides.

36 = 8⬤ - 2⬤

36 = 6

1⬤ = 36/6

1⬤ = 6
