ELAPSED TIME PRACTICE WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

Edgar logged 7 hours 45 minutes at work yesterday. If he finished at 4 : 30 p.m.,  at what time did he begin ?

Solution :

Duration of logging in = 7 hours 45 minutes

He ends his work at 4 : 30 pm

Considering 12 hours clock, 

We have to go back 7 hours 45 minutes from 4 : 30 pm. 4 hours 30 minutes can be taken from 4 : 30. the remaining 3 hours and 15 minutes to be subtracted from 12 pm

He starts his work at 8 : 45 am.

Problem 2 :

Ferdinand  started out  on his vacation last Thursday at 5 : 15 a.m. He drove for 14 hours 35 minutes before stopping for the night. At what time did he stop ?

Solution :

Considering 24 hours clock, we have to add 14 hours and 35 minutes with the given time.

The result can be subtracted with 12 in order to convert for 12 hours clock.

Converting to 12 hour clock :

So, he starts his work at 7 : 50 am.

Problem 3 :

Grady checked out  of work at 10 : 05 p.m after working 6 hours and 45 minutes. When did he check in for work that day ?

Solution :

Leaving time = 10 : 05 p.m

He is started work time = 6 hours and 45 minutes

Difference = 10 : 05 - 6 : 45

He starts his work at 3 : 20 pm.

Problem 4 :

Howard took 5 hours 15 minutes to work his shift  at the Peking Duck Company. He started his work at 9 : 50 a.m. At what time did he finish work that day?

Solution :

Duration of the time = 5 hours 15 minutes

He is started work time = 9 : 50 a.m. 

Difference = 9 : 50 - 5 : 15

So, he finishes his work in 4 hours 35 minutes.

Problem 5 :

Recess began at 11 : 12 am. It ended at 11 : 44 am. How long was recess ?

Solution :

Started time = 11 : 12 am

End time = 11 : 44 am

Difference = 11 : 44 - 11 : 12

Hence, the recess is 32 minutes.

Problem 6 :

The assembly started at 3 : 02 pm. It ended at 3 : 58 pm. How long was the assembly ? 

Solution :

Started time = 3 : 02 pm

End time = 3 : 58 pm

Difference = 3 : 58 - 3 : 02

Hence, the duration of assembly time is 56 minutes.

Problem 7 :

Soccer practice began at 8  : 35 am. It ended at 9 : 50 am. How long was soccer practice ?

Solution :

Started time = 8 : 35 am

End time = 9 : 50 am

Difference = 9 : 50 - 8 : 35

So, time taken for soccer practice is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Problem 8 :

Our lunch started at 12 : 00 pm. We finished at 1 : 05 pm. How long was our lunch ?

Solution :

Lunch starting time = 12 : 00 pm

Finished time = 1 : 05 pm

Time taken for lunch is 1 hour and 5 minutes.

Problem 9 :

My best friends and I met at the movies at 6 : 45 pm. We were picked up at 8 : 15 pm. How long were we at the movies ?

Solution :

My best friends and I met at the movies time = 6.45 pm.

Picked up time = 8 .15 pm

Difference = 8 : 15 - 6 : 45

Time taken for the movie is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Problem 10 :

The exercise video started at 1 : 37 pm. It ended at 2 : 20 pm. How long was the exercise video ?

Solution :

The exercise video started time = 1 : 37 pm

End time = 2 : 20 pm

Difference = 2 : 20 - 1 : 37

So, duration of the video is 58 minutes

Problem 11 :

The game started at 7 : 50 pm. It ended at 10 : 04 pm. How long was the game ?

Solution :

Game starting time = 7 : 50 pm

End time = 10.04 pm

Difference = 10 : 04 - 7 : 50

Hence, duration of the game was 2 hours and 14 minutes.

Problem 12 :

The dog's nap started at 7 : 14 am and ended at 7 : 57 am. How long was the dog's nap ?

Solution :

The dog's nap started time = 7 : 14 am

End time = 7 : 57 am

Difference = 7 : 57 - 7 : 14

So, it took nap of 43 minutes.
