Determine the gross pay in each word problem.

Problem 1 :

Brent started painting the house at 8:30 a.m. He finished for the day at 4:00 p.m. He earned $7.50 per hour.

Solution :

He started working at 8.30 am

8:30 am to 9:30 am = 1 hour

9:30 am to 10:30 am = 1 hour

10:30 am to 12:30 pm = 2 hours

12:30 pm to 1:30 pm = 1 hour

1:30 pm to 3:30 pm = 2 hours

3:30 pm to 4:00 pm = 30 minutes

Total number of hours he is working

= 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 30 minutes

= 7 hours 30 minutes

= 7.5 hours

His earning for 1 hour = 7.50

Total earning for 7.5 hours = 7.50 x 7.50

= $56.25

Problem 2 :

Walter took 3 hours 45 minutes to fix the engine problems of the car brought into his auto repair shop. He earned $36 per hour.

Solution :

Total number of hours Walter is taking = 3 hours 45 minutes

Converting minutes into fraction,

1 hour = 60 minutes

1 minute = 1/60 hour

45 minutes = 45/60 hour

45 minutes = 3/4 hour ==> 0.75

He is working 3.75 hours. To calculate his total earning, we have to multiply the number of working by the charge he is getting per hour.

= 3.75 x 36

= $135

So, his total earning is $135.

12:45 pm to 1 pm = 15 minutes

1 pm to 5 pm = 5 hours

5 pm to 5:30 pm = 30 minutes

= (4 + 5) hours and (15 + 30) minutes

= 9 hours and 45 minutes

45 minutes = 3/4 hours==>0.75

Total number of hours he is working = 9.75 hours

His revenue = 12.50 x 9.75

= $121.875

12:05 pm to 1:05 pm = 1 hour

1:05 pm to 2:01 = 56 minutes

Total number of hours = 6 hours 56 minutes

= 56/60 hours

= 0.93 hours

= 6.93 hours

Charge for 1 hour = $8.75

Total charge = 8.75 x 6.93

= $60.63

Charge per hour = $14.60

Total charge = 8.25 x 14.60

= $120.45

Total number of hours = (4 + 5) hours - 15 minutes

= 9 hours - 15 minutes

= 8 hours 45 minutes

Converting minutes to decimals = 45/60 ==> 0.75

So, total number of hours working = 8.75 hours

Hi earning per hour = $8.40

Total revenue = 8.75 x 8.40
