CUSTOMARY UNITS OF WEIGHT POUNDS AND OUNCES WORD PROBLEMS

Lucy made 3 cakes that each weighed 32 ounces. How many pounds of cake did Lucy make ?

Solution :

Number of cakes = 3

Weighed of each cake = 32 ounces.

Weight of 3 cakes = 3 × 32 

= 96 ounces

1 pound = 16 ounces

1 ounces = 1/16 pounds

96 ounces = 96/16

= 6

So, weight of cake in pounds = 6 pounds.

Problem 2 :

Mike's turkey burger recipe calls for 4 pounds of ground turkey. How many ounces of ground turkey should Mike purchase at the local grocery store ?

Solution :

Mike's turkey burger recipe calls for 4 pounds of ground turkey.

Number of pounds = 4

1 pound = 16 ounces

4 pounds = 4 × 16

 = 64 ounces 

Problem 3 :

Sarah's dog weighs 64 ounces. How many pounds does Sarah's dog weigh ?

Solution :

Sarah's dog weighs 64 ounces.

1 pound = 16 ounces

1 ounces = 1/16 pounds

64 ounces = 64/16

= 4 pounds

So, Sarah's dog weighs is 4 pounds.

Problem 4 :

Jim's soccer bag weighs 48 ounces. He removed his cleats and shinguards that weighed a total of 1 pound.How much does his soccer bag weigh now ?

Solution :

Bag weigh  = 48 ounces

Total pound = 1

1 ounces = 1/16 pounds

.48 ounces = 48/16 pounds

= 3 pounds

Total pound = 3 - 1

= 2 pounds

Hence, weigh of soccer bag is 2 pounds.

Problem 5 :

Carlos wants to buy a new 40 - pound dumbbell to boost his fitness. What is the weight of the dumbbell in ounces ?

Solution :

New dumbbell price = 40 - pounds

1 pound = 16 ounces

40 pounds = 40 × 16

= 640 ounces

So, weight of the dumbbell is 640 ounces.

Problem 6 :

Venice prepared 2 main dishes for dinner for her family. The roasted chicken weighs 9 lbs 6 oz, and the roasted turkey is 21 lbs 13 oz. How much heavier is the roasted turkey than the roasted chicken ?

Solution :

Total dishes = 2

First dish :

Roasted chicken weighs = 9 lbs 6 oz

Second dish :

Roasted turkey = 21 lbs 13 oz

= 21 lbs 13 oz - 9 lbs 6 oz

= 12 lbs 7 oz

The roasted turkey is 12 lbs 7 oz heavier than the roasted chicken.

Problem 7 :

Megan prepared 8 special cupcakes for her cousins. Each cupcake contains 3 ounces of cocoa powder and 2 ounces of sugar. How much cocoa powder did Megan use for the cupcakes in all ? Express your answer in lbs and oz.

Solution :

Number of cupcakes = 8

cupcake contains the cocoa powder = 3 ounces

sugar = 2 ounces

 = 8 × 3

= 24 ounces

24 ounce = 1 lb 8 oz

Megan used 1 lb 8 oz of cocoa powder in all.

Problem 8:

Fred used a total of 6 lbs of peanuts and 5 lbs of sugar to make 4 jars of peanut butter. How many ounces of peanuts did he use in each jar ?

Solution :

Total peanuts = 6 lbs

sugar = 5 lbs

peanut butter = 4 jars

1 pound = 16 ounces

6 lbs = 6 × 16

= 96 ounces

= 96/4

= 24 ounces

Each jar has 24 ounces of peanuts.

Problem 9 :

The mass of an empty pail is 3 oz. When it is filled with sand, the mass of the pail with the sand is 5 lbs. What is the mass of the sand in the pail ?

Solution :

Mass of the empty pail = 3 oz 

The mass of the pail with the sand = 5 lb

5 lbs = 5 × 16

= 80 ounces

80 ounces - 3 ounces = 77 ounces  

The mass of the sand in the pail is 77 ounces.

Problem 10 :

Christine bought 6 bags of corn chips, 3 bags of nachos and 5 cans of cola from one store. The mass of each bag of corn chips is 5 ounces and the mass of each bag of nachos is 4 ounces. What is the total mass of the snacks she bought ? Express your answer in lbs and oz.

Solution :

corn chips = 6 bags

nachos = 3 bags

number of cola = 5 cans

Mass of corn chips = 5 ounces

Mass of nachos = 4 ounces

Corn chips = 6 × 5 

= 30 ounces

Nachos = 3 × 4

= 12 ounces

Total mass = 30 + 12

= 42 ounces

1 pound = 16 ounces

2 pound = 16 × 2

= 32 ounces

= 32 ounces + 10 ounces

1 ounce = 1/16 pounds

32 ounces = 32/16 pounds

= 2 pounds

Total mass of the snacks is 2 lbs 10 oz.
