Problem 1 :
Brian was tiling a patio and ran out of tiles. The width of the remaining area is 2/3 yard. The length of the remaining area is 4 yards. What is the area Brian has left to tile ?
Solution :
The length of the remaining area = 4 yards
The width of the remaining area = 2/3 yard
Since, area of the remaining area of the rectangular patio.
a = l × w
= 4 × 2/3
= 8/3
= 2.67 square yards
Therefore, area of the remaining area of the rectangular patio = 2.67 square yards.
Problem 2 :
Rylee knows that the area for the face-painting station is 166 square feet. She knows that the length of the rectangular area is 12 feet. How wide is the area ?
Solution :
area for the face painting station = 166 square feet
length of the rectangular area = 12 feet
a = l × w
166 = 12 × w
166/12 = w
13.83 = w
So, area of the wide is 13.83 feet.
Problem 3 :
Coby needs to know the area and perimeter of his farm property. The length of his property is 1/12 mile and the width is 3/8 mile. What is the area ? what is the perimeter ?
Solution :
length = 1/12 miles
width = 3/8 miles
a = l × w a = 1/12 × 3/8 Area = 3/96 square miles |
Perimeter = 2(l + w) = 2(1/12 + 3/8) = 2(2/24 + 9/24) = 2(11/24) = 22/24 miles perimeter = 11/12 |
Problem 4 :
The area for the dance floor is 45 square feet, and one side is 8 feet. What is the length of the other side ?
Solution :
Dance floor area = 45 square feet
Width = 8 feet
To find the length of the other side :
a = l × w
45 = l × 8
45/8 = l
5.625 = l
So, the length of the other side is 5.625.
Problem 5 :
Margo wants new carpet and a new wallpaper border for her bedroom. The room is 5.4 meters long and 4 7/8 meters wide.
About how many square meters of carpet will she need ?
About how many meters of wallpaper border will she need ?
Solution :
Length of the room = 5.4 meters
width = 4 7/8 meters
a = l × w
a = 5.4 × 4 7/8
= 5.4 × 39/8
= 54/10 × 39/8
= 27/5 × 39/8
= 1053/40
= 26.325
She will need 26.325 square meters of carpet.
Problem 6 :
Tomas has a garden with a length of 2.45 meters and a width of 5/8 meter. Use benchmarks to estimate the area and perimeter of the garden.
Solution :
length = 2.45 meters
width = 5/8 meter.
area = l × w = 2.45 × 5/8 = 12.25/8 area = 1.53 square meter |
Perimeter = 2(l + w) = 2(2.45 + 5/8) = 4.9 + 10/8 = (39.2 + 10)/8 = 49.2/8 = 6.15 |
Area of the garden is 1.53 square meter.
Perimeter of the garden is 6.15 meter.
