COMPARING FRACTIONS DECIMALS AND PERCENTAGES

To compare fractions, decimals and percentages, sometimes converting everything into the same unit will be easy.

Converting percentage to decimal :

  • To convert the percentage to decimal, we have to remove the percentage sign and write the denominator as 100.
  • Then we have to move the decimal two digits to the left.

Converting fractions to decimals :

To convert fractions to decimals, we can use long division otherwise making the denominator as multiple of 10, we can convert into decimals easily.

Order this list from smallest to largest.

Problem 1 :

0.3, 15%, 2, 1/2

Solution :

15% = 15/100 = 0.15

1/2 = 0.5

0.3, 0.15, 2, 0.5

So, the number smallest to largest is 0.15 < 0.3 < 0.5 < 2.

Problem 2 :

3/4, 3, 0.4, 5%

Solution :

3/4 = 0.75

5% = 0.05

0.75, 3, 0.4, 0.05

So, the number smallest to largest is  0.05 < 0.4 < 0.75 < 3.

Problem 3 :

0.14, 4%, 0.48, 1/5

Solution :

4% = 0.04

1/5 = 0.2

0.14, 0.04, 0.48, 0.2

So, the number smallest to largest is 0.04 < 0.14 < 0.2 < 0.48.

Problem 4 :

0.46, 3%, 1/4, 0.14

Solution :

3% = 0.03

1/4 = 0.25

0.46, 0.03, 0.25, 0.14

So, the number smallest to largest is 0.03 < 0.14 < 0.25 < 0.46.

Problem 5 :

6/5, 58.9%, 1.77, 0.169

Solution :

6/5 = 1.2

58.9% = 0.589

1.2, 0.589, 1.77, 0.169

So, the number smallest to largest is 0.169 < 0.589 < 1.2 < 1.77.
