CALCULATING CHANGE WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING DECIMALS

Compute the change for each story problem.

Problem 1 :

Milburn purchased a shirt for $19.95 and a pair of pants for $24.95. He paid $3.14 in sales tax. What was his change from $50 ?

Solution :

Cost of shirt = $19.95

A pair of pants = $24.95

Sales tax = $3.14

Change amount = $50 

Total cost =12.119.95(+)24.953.1448.04

Change we get,

49.91050.00(-)48.0401.96

Problem 2 :

Arlo bought several items that totaled $13.49. What was his change from a $20 bill ? 

Solution :

Total amount = $13.49

Change amount = $20

Change we get,

19.91020.00(-)13.4906.51

Problem 3 :

Pamela spent $73.28 at the "five and dime". How much change did she get back from $100 ?

Solution :

Total amount = $100

Amount spent by Pamela = $73.28

Change we get,

Problem 4 :

Raoul bought a screwdriver set for $14.98 and a pair of pliers for $2.98. He paid $1.33 in tax. What was his change from a $20 bill  ?

Solution :

Price of Screwdriver = $14.98

Price of pliers = $2.98

Sales tax = $1.33

Change amount = $20

Total cost =2.114.98(+)2.981.3319.29

Change we get,

Problem 5 :

Hentry purchased a basketball for $26.75 and a roll of duct tape for $2.79. He paid $0.39 in sales tax. What was his change from $40 ?

Price of Basketball = $26.75

Price of a roll of duct tape =  $2.79

Sales tax = $0.39

Change amount = $40

Change we get,

Problem 6 :

Ami bought a cherry wood desk for $259 and a desk chair for $38.59. She paid no sales tax on the items. If she paid with three $100 bills, how much change did she receive ?

Solution :

Price of wood desk = $259

Price of desk chair =  $38.59

Total cost =1259.00(+)38.59297.59

She paid with three $100 bills. Which is a total of $300.

Problem 7 :

At the school cafeteria, Phil bought two sandwiches at $1.75 each, 3 cookies for $0.50 each, and a soda for $1.09. If there was no sales tax, what was his change form $10.00 ? 

Solution :

Price of one sandwich = $1.75

Cost of sandwiches price = 2 ×  1.75

= $3.5

Price of one cookie = $0.50

Price of 3 cookies = 3 ×  0.50

= $1.5

Price of soda = $1.09

Total cost =13.5(+)1.51.09609

Change we get,

Problem 8 :

Baker purchased a dozen golf balls for $12.50, a bag of tees for $1.79, and a golf shirt for $27.99. He paid $2.96 in sales tax. What was his change from $50.00 ?

Baker purchased, 

A dozen golf balls = $12.50

A bag of tees = $1.79

A golf shirt = $27.99

Sales tax = $2.96

Change amount = $50.00

Total cost =13212.50(+)1.7927.992.9645.24

Change we get,

Problem 9 :

Lucas spent a total of $14.79 on cat food. How much change did he get back from $20.00 ?

Solution :

Total cost = $14.79

Change amount = $20.00

Problem 10 :

Freddie purchased five cassette tapes for $3.95 each. He paid $1.11 in sales tax. How much change did he receive from $30.00 ?

Solution :

Freddie purchased,

One cassette tapes = $3.95

Five cassette tapes = 5 ×  3.95

= $19.75

Sales tax = $1.11

Change amount = $30.00

Total cost =119.75(+)1.1120.86

Change we get,
